What is a Speed Calculator?

A Speed Calculator is a tool that helps you solve for any one of the three variables in the speed-distance-time relationship, given the other two. It's based on the fundamental physics formula: Speed = Distance รท Time.

The Speed-Distance-Time Triangle

  • Speed = Distance รท Time
  • Distance = Speed ร— Time
  • Time = Distance รท Speed

How to Use the Speed Calculator

  • Select what you want to calculate: Speed, Distance, or Time.
  • Choose your preferred unit system (km/h, mph, or m/s).
  • Enter the two known values.
  • Click the Calculate button for instant results with unit conversions.

Practical Examples

  • A car travels 240 km in 3 hours โ†’ Speed = 80 km/h
  • A train at 120 km/h for 2.5 hours โ†’ Distance = 300 km
  • A cyclist covers 60 km at 20 km/h โ†’ Time = 3 hours

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert km/h to mph?+
1 km/h = 0.621371 mph. So multiply the km/h value by 0.621371 to get mph. For example, 100 km/h = 62.14 mph. Our calculator automatically shows conversions between units when you calculate speed.
How do I calculate average speed?+
Average Speed = Total Distance รท Total Time. Enter the total distance covered and total time taken (including any stops) to get the average speed. Note that average speed is not the same as average of two speeds.
What units does this calculator support?+
Our Speed Calculator supports km/h (kilometres per hour), mph (miles per hour), and m/s (metres per second). It also shows automatic conversions between these units in the results.
How do I enter time in minutes?+
Enter time as a decimal of hours. For example, 30 minutes = 0.5 hours, 45 minutes = 0.75 hours, 90 minutes = 1.5 hours. You can also calculate: minutes รท 60 = hours.
